Mirage

Download Score

for solo violin. Recorded live on March 23, 2012.
Violin: Hannah K Watson

A mirage exists inasmuch as it does not. For a person experiencing this phenomenon, the illusion is as real as anything. The eyes and the mind play a trick on the observer. Such an experience lulls the individual into an alternate state of reality. Other dimensions open up, displacing reality in even the most subtle of ways, creating illusions that may appear slightly shifted from their actual location in space.

Would you, kindly...

Download Score

for two violins and cello.
Recorded live for my senior recital on Friday, March 23, 2012.
Violins: Hannah K Watson and Monte Weber
Cello: Kelsee Vandervall

Melody is something that is sometimes neglected in modern music. It has been overlooked as something that is secondary in comparison to other musical parameters. "Would you, kindly..." seeks to bring melody to the same rigor as texture, harmony, and color.

\un\broken

Download Score

for trombone and electronics.
Recorded live for my senior recital on Friday, March 23, 2012.
Trombone: Zsolt Szabo

To be unbroken is to be continuous. In regards to continuity, it can take various forms, such as a truly continuous motion from one point to another, as well as a metaphoric continuity, one that does not take into possibility everything between two points, but is still going from one point to another. This combination of true continuity and metaphoric continuity is what creates \un\broken.

___________

This work comes about by sampling the audience applauding, and then processing that sample using pre-determined processes.

Esplalier

Download Score

for Brass Quintet, performed and recorded December 15, 2011.

An espalier is created through the process of forcing the branches of a plant to a grid. Through this manipulation of the organic object, it begins to emulate something that is very inorganic. This process originated in the 17th century. This method can be used for aesthetic purposes as a form of decoration, or for reasons of efficiency to keep a space cleared. In a creative medium, it is common to try to recreate something organic, but in doing so the organicism is lost, so by default it is inorganic.

The first generation of Æsir (Norse gods): Odin, Vili, and Vé, set out to destroy the first frost giant, Ymir. Their mighty battle has begun. Ymir knows he cannot beat the gods, but he still puts up a fight. Ymir is aware of the fact that he is mortally outnumbered, but surrender is an action that a giant could never fathom. Ymir finally accepts his defeat, and comes to terms that he cannot make it through this battle; however, Ymir will not give up so easily, so he gives them one final push, before he is finally defeated.
